Going Beyond a Plank Wood Floor

Decorative wood floor elements, such as medallions, borders and inlays, can add authenticity to any commercial or residential space. They are the perfect blend of today’s innovation with the trends and traditions of the past.

In the early days, these decorative elements were hand-cut by by skilled craftsman. Today, we have machinery such as lasers and CNC machines to make the process faster. However, in the end though, it is still very much a partnership between the wood and the creative vision from the designers and craftsman. For Woodwright Hardwood Floor Company, the process of creating these medallions is very much a labor of love…..and patience.

We take the time to appreciate the unique characteristics of various species and cuts of wood and patiently craft design elements that enhance our projects. There is nothing more satisfying than melding the inherent beauty of a naturally rich grain pattern with the meticulous hand-crafting skills to exceed a client’s expectation.

While most people can agree on how beautiful a wood medallion is, there are few that fully understand the amount of work that goes into creating one. The process of making a medallion can take a few weeks to several months, involving painstaking hand assembly by highly skilled woodworkers with a passion for their craft. Get a glimpse of how we create a medallion by watching the time lapse video below:

Ask any wood floor installer and they will tell you that the most stressful part of the process is installing a decorative element. One small mistake could ruin hundreds of hours of work.

White Oak Stage

Transforming a Stage at Tobin Performing Arts Center

We recently had the pleasure of working with Tobin Center for Performing Arts and Gala Systems to install new hardwood floors in San Antonio, TX. This project was very unique in that the floor needed to transform into multiple configurations at the flip of a switch, for example from tiered auditorium seating to a flat open banquet room in a matter of minutes. You can view the transformation in this video.

In order to achieve the standards demanded by this project, we installed a custom white oak wood floor. The wood flooring is rift cut as to allow for a straight, linear grain appearance to achieve the architect’s desired intent In addition, the wood flooring was a combination of engineered and solid installed over a subfloor system that contained metal encased wood sleepers.

In terms of functionality, this was definitely one of our more unique wood floors. Though the installation was challenging, our team of construction professionals did what they do best and executed a flawless on time install.

Whether you need to create a moving floor, a laser cut medallion or a beautiful set of stairs, our methodical process and attention to detail can be a great asset to you. The work performed at Tobin Center for Performing Arts is a shining example of our “can do, will do” attitude and achievements.

About FloorScore®
Contributors to poor indoor air quality include inadequate ventilation, poor cleaning, and/or excessive emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Because people now spend 90% of their time indoors, breathing poor quality air increases the risk for a variety of health concerns.

While industry insiders know that LEED certification has become the standard for environmentally safe projects, FloorScore® has also become the standard for hard surface flooring for meeting stringent indoor air quality requirements. Developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI), hard surface flooring and adhesive products are now rigorously tested and independently verified by SCS Global Services, an independent 3rd party certification organization, for compliance with the VOC emissions criteria of California Section 01350. FloorScore® measures the most important risk to indoor air quality, the emission levels of specific VOCs found in flooring products. A FloorScore® certification means that the product actually contributes to good indoor air quality. To learn more about FloorScore®, please visit www.rfci.com.

Breathe Easier with Floorscore® Certification

Did you know indoor air pollution is 2-5 times higher than that found outdoors?

Contributors to poor indoor air quality include inadequate ventilation, poor cleaning, and/or excessive emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). Because people now spend 90% of their time indoors, breathing poor quality air increases the risk for a variety of health concerns.

While industry insiders know that LEED certification has become the standard for environmentally safe projects, a relatively unheard of certification that is quickly rising in demand is FloorScore®. Developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI), hard surface flooring and adhesive products are now rigorously tested and independently verified by a 3rd party certification organization for compliance with indoor air quality emissions requirements. FloorScore® measures the most important risk to indoor air quality, the emission levels of specific VOC’s found in flooring products. A FloorScore® certification means that the product actually contributes to good indoor air quality.

Fewer VOC’s = Healthier Air = Healthier Humans.

As an FSC® certified manufacturer since 2009, Woodwright Hardwood Floor Company continues to take a proactive approach to maintaining the delicate balance between man and our environment. Having recently completed the rigorous certification process for our engineered wood flooring (unfinished and finished), we are proud to receive the FloorScore® seal of approval. Offering yet another layer of confidence and commitment to providing safe and sustainable products for our architect, designer, developer and commercial partners.

FloorScore® certified products qualify for many rating systems and include the following:

● USGBC – Contribute to LEED credit EQ4.3 (flooring systems)
● California Section 01350 Specification Standard Method, Version 1.1 (2010)
● ANSI/GBI 012010 – Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings
